Dawson Podiums, Battelle And Westerlund Fourth At Tremblant World Cup

Mt. Tremblant, Que. Jan. 15--For the first time in his young career,Toby Dawson (Vail, CO) found a spot on a World Cup podium as he finishedthird Saturday in mogul competition at Mount Tremblant resort, about 90minutes outside Montreal.

Dawson, whose previous best World Cup finish was a fifth last season(also at Tremblant), threw down a solid run for a 26.78 score. ReigningWorld Cup and '99 World Championships gold medalist Janne Lahtela ofFinland took the gold with a 27.17 and France's Johann Gregoire posted a26.81 to narrowly edge Dawson for second. It is Dawson's third World Cuptop-10 finish as he also recorded a sixth last year in Whistler, B.C. .

Like Dawson, Luke Westerlund (Scarsdale, NY) is in just his secondseason of World Cup action. The reigning NorAm moguls champion,Westerlund finished just behind Dawson in fourth place Saturday with a26.73.Ryan Riley (Steamboat Springs, CO) was the third U.S. freestyler in thetop-10 as he was 10th with a 25.62.

On the women's side, Norway's Kari Traa again showed her consistency asshe won for the fourth time in five World Cup events this season. Traahad a 26.49 to beat out Japan's Aiko Uemura (25.06) and Canada's TamiBradley (25.01).

Three-time Olympian Ann Battelle (Steamboat Springs, CO) was the topAmerican woman in fourth with a 24.64.

Two other U.S. skiers were in the top-10 as Jillian Vogtli(Ellicotville, NY) skied to a seventh-place spot with a 24.50 andJustine Van Houte (Telluride, CO) posted a 23.45, good for a tenth-placefinish.hHannah Hardaway (Moultonborough, NH), rebounding from knee surgery forthe second-straight season, came in 14th, skiing a 22.26. Hardaway, aformer World Juniors champion, recorded her best World Cup finish(eighth) at Tremblant in 1997.Mount Tremblant hosts aerials competition Sunday.
