BRITISH

Natural travelers, Brits are the most frequent foreign visitors to North American slopes. They favor Breckenridge, the No. 1 resort for U.K. skiers, according to the Ski Club of Great Britain.

AURSTALIANS

Aussies are the second-biggest group at many resorts. They love Vail, Whistler, Aspen, Mammoth and most Utah areas, so much so that many end up working at a resort for a season or two.

LATIN AMERICANS

Mexicans have long flocked to Vail. Now they're expanding to Beaver Creek and the Park City mountains as well. Brazilians, meanwhile, are up-and-comers at Aspen and Deer Valley.

GERMANS

They love spurs, saddles and cowboy hats. "Aspen has a mystique," says a Hamburg-based tour operator. Other Western-themed mountains, such as Jackson Hole, are also favorites.

JAPANESE Whistler remains the top destination for Japanese skiers, who largely eschew U.S. slopes. "The Japanese seem to be impossible to affect with promotion efforts," laments Chris Jarnot, Vail's marketing chief.
