Up until recently, skiing free after age 70 was practically an inalienable skier's right. And it was always a pretty safe bet for ski areas: The life expectancy of the average man born in 1970 was 67.1. But now the census bureau has males born today passing on at 74 (79 for women). And the census brain trust predicts life expectancies to increase roughly seven years by 2050. So it should come as no surprise that a trend is afoot to require sliding septuagenarians to ante up for lift passes. In fact, Vail Resorts (all four of them) as well as Aspen have recently announced that seniors will have to pony up to enjoy what only last year was gratis. More resorts are soon to follow, no doubt.
