Sierra-at-Tahoe Pray for Snow Party, November 13If having a few drinks and yodeling for fresh snow doesn't get you amped up for the season, nothing will. But if this sounds better than your average Tuesday night, join California diehards at Sierra-at-Tahoe's 10th annual Pray for Snow Party, held this year at the Rockwater Bar and Grill in South Lake Tahoe (opening day is usually two weeks later). Cobble together some lyrics or grab your recorder and join your fellow performers who will sing, dance, howl, rap, and perhaps moan to entice the snow gods to bless them with powdery plunder. "One year a girl had a snowgasm," recalls frequent snow-caller Curtis Fong. "You know, 'yes snow, harder snow, oh yeah, give it to me.' I don't remember if she won, but she got all of the men's votes." Considering all the free beer and blaring bagpipes, we forgive Fong his fuzzy recollection. But nobody forgets the prize-a free season pass to Northstar-at-Tahoe and Sierra-at-Tahoe. Cornucopia, Whistler, B.C., November 5-9This four-day food and wine tasting binge culminates with Friday night's Crush Gala, a gourmet event featuring 22 celebrity chefs and 75 wineries. It's $69 to get in, but a hangover "Recovery Room" featuring soothing music, chicken noodle soup, and ginger ale is free on Saturday morning. Ullr Fest, Sugarbush, VT, November 28Pay homage to the Norse snow deity himself at this opening-weekend bash. Show up in your favorite Viking-inspired getup (we recommend animal hides and horns) for the afternoon's parade and costume contest and you'll receive discounted lift tickets.
