How to Tweak Your Boots: step 4

When a boot is buckled to the desired tightness, the buckle should land near the middle of the ladder, or catch, Gleason says. Most buckle "throws" are threaded and can be lengthened or shortened by twisting the buckle one way or the other. In many cases, the catch can be moved closer to or farther from the buckle-to decrease or increase the amount of closure force it exerts. A few boots even allow you to move the instep buckle catch fore or aft on the boot, so that it pulls the boot closed in the direction that's most comfortable over the top of the foot. Experiment with these adjustments until you achieve a snug, even wrap of the foot.
