How to Tweak Your Boots: step 5

Many boots come with cuffs that can be made higher or lower in back to accommodate various calf shapes. Women often have lower, thicker calf muscles, Gleason notes. "For a larger calf, moving the cuff height down allows more room at the top of the boot shaft, whereas someone with a leaner leg would want to move it higher." Some boot tongues are also adjustable, usually with a Velcro attachment: Move the tongue up to create more room over the top of the foot or down to make the fit snugger. You may also have a slalom plate, which can be added to the front of the cuff to firm it up for quicker response. In bumps, though, it'll punish you.
