STEP 1: LEARN TO FLEX

Buttering is the act of using your skis' flex pattern to "pop" off the ground while spinning. Start slow when you're first learning. Once you develop the skill, you can add speed, which will load your skis and give you more pop.

STEP 2: USE YOUR TAILS

One of the most common buttering tricks is the tail butter 360. To do it, start off skiing switch. As you begin your first rotation, lean back and put your weight on your tails. This lifts your tips and lets you start to spin. (See above photo.)

STEP 3: BRING YOUR KNEES UP

As you spin forward, pull your knees toward your chest while keeping your weight on your tails. Your skis will flex, load up, and rebound, propelling you into the next spin. (See above photo.)

Quick Tip:

The faster you go, the more spring you'll get out of your skis.

STEP 4: THROW YOUR WEIGHT AROUND

If you're relatively strong, you'll be able to hold the ski in its flexed position before you let it rebound, creating more pop. Your boards will want to flatten out. Stop them by throwing your weight forward (and uphill) as you hit the ground switch. (See photo to the right.)

STEP 5: BUTTER WITH MORE FORCE

Use the same principles for nose buttering as you do with tail buttering. When you're comfortable on both tips and tails, try initiating the butter sooner, and spinning harder-into a 540 or a 720. Nail it and someone might be so impressed with how well you butter your muffin, they might let you butter theirs!
